We speak a lot about the Declaration and Constitution but do we really know what they say? Even though we aren’t experts, we can learn by reading and discussing the founding documents together.

Please respond to the posts. I’ll add texts as we go, but you can discuss any of the posts at any time. We really want to hear what you have to say!

    8) He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

    9) He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

    10) He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

    11) He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

This selection has two topics of grievance. First, population control. The King was seeking to slow the population growth of the colonies by limiting naturalization laws and raising requirements for gaining land. Second, government control. The king was interfering with the courts by limiting their powers and seeking to insure they only decided cases as he wanted them. The king also expanded the bureaucracy.
